MASTERING WATER PROPAGATION: A SIMPLE GUIDE TO GROWING YOUR PLANT COLLECTION

Water propagation is one of the most rewarding and visually satisfying ways to expand your indoor jungle. It is a low-cost, set-it-and-forget-it method that allows you to watch new life form right before your eyes. Whether you are a seasoned plant parent or a complete beginner, rooting cuttings in water is a fantastic way to clone your favorite green friends.

HOW TO TAKE A SUCCESSFUL CUTTING

To ensure your cutting survives, you need to identify the node. The node is the small bump or joint on the stem where leaves and aerial roots grow.

  1. Select a Healthy Stem: Choose a vibrant, pest-free vine or branch.

  2. Make the Cut: Use a clean, sharp pair of shears to cut about an inch below a node.

  3. Strip Lower Leaves: Remove any leaves that would be submerged in water to prevent rot.

  4. Place in Water: Submerge the node in a jar of room-temperature filtered water.

PRO-TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Change the Water: Refresh the water every 5 to 7 days to keep oxygen levels high and bacteria low.

  • Lighting: Place your jars in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can cook the delicate new roots or cause algae blooms.

  • The Roots for Roots Rule: Wait until the new roots are at least 2 to 4 inches long before transitioning the cutting to soil.

  • Best Plants for Beginners: Pothos, Philodendron, Tradescantia, and Monsteras are nearly foolproof for water rooting.

It's normal for cuttings to show some signs of stress from transit, such as wilting, yellowing, or slight browning. This doesn’t necessarily mean the cutting isn’t viable—the node is the most important part, and it’s often still healthy and ready to grow.
