Hoya macrophylla ‘Variegata’ is a vining wax plant loved for its large, thick leaves with deep green centers and creamy white or pink margins that give it a bold, tropical look. Native to humid tropical forests in Southeast Asia, it typically grows as an epiphyte, climbing or trailing and producing clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers in warm conditions.

Appearance

Leaves are ovate, waxy, and can reach about 6 inches long, with striking cream, yellow, or pink borders around a darker green center.

The plant grows as an evergreen climber or trailer, ideal for hanging baskets or trained up a trellis for a lush, cascading effect.

Light and environment

Thrives in bright, indirect light; too much direct sun can scorch the variegated margins, while too little light dulls the color and slows growth.

Best suited to warm indoor conditions or very mild outdoor climates (roughly USDA zones 10–11), with preference for higher humidity similar to its tropical origins.

Water, soil, and care

Prefers a well-draining mix such as loamy or sandy soil amended to keep roots aerated, and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding prolonged sogginess.

Grows 4–6 feet indoors with low to moderate maintenance needs, responding well to stable temperatures, good drainage, and occasional feeding during the growing season.

Flowers and benefits

Produces clusters of waxy, pink or white, sweetly scented flowers, usually in the warmer months when given enough light and consistent care.

Commonly grown as an ornamental indoor plant for its showy evergreen foliage and fragrance, and is also noted as non-toxic to people and pets.

‼️ Important Info for All Plant Cuttings ‼️

After your purchase, please take a moment to read the note from me that includes tips and tricks for propagating your cutting successfully! While it’s rare, shipping stress can sometimes affect cuttings. If you notice any issues upon arrival, please reach out within 48 hours of delivery. I'm happy to offer a refund, replacement, or coupon if there's a problem — but I can only help if I hear from you within that window!

🌿 Normal Shipping Stress
It's completely normal for cuttings to show signs of stress such as wilting, yellowing, or browning during transit. This doesn't mean the cutting is dead — as long as the node is healthy, the cutting is still viable and has the potential to root and grow.

📦 Shipping & Weather Notes
All cuttings are shipped via USPS Standard Shipping. If you’d like a quicker option, please select Priority Shipping at checkout.

If temperatures in your area are expected to drop below 50°F (10°C), I strongly recommend adding a heat pack to your order (available in the shop or as a shipping upgrade). This helps protect your cutting during transit and reduces the risk of cold damage.

🌡️ Weather & Delivery
Please keep an eye on the weather in your area. I do my best to pack your plants with care, but I’m not able to control USPS delays, weather-related issues, or delivery errors. If there’s a delivery problem, you can contact USPS directly — but I’m always happy to help where I can, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
